Description
The Limekiln at Phantassie is a late 18th century structure with a trapezoidal plan. It features three vents and a rear tunnel. The kiln is constructed from roughly squared sandstone rubble with sandstone dressings. It stands 22 feet tall and is 24 feet wide at the front, where the vents measure 11 feet wide. The rear tunnel is 40 feet long and 10 feet wide. The kiln itself has a diameter of 16 feet and is lined with dressed stones, although it is now collapsing. The vent arches rise to 13 feet and taper sharply to the draw holes, which are made of coursed sandstone. Above the arches, there are two rows of socketed corbels. An access ramp is located at the rear of the structure.
