Description
The East Kiln and Steading at Hillhead Farm is an early to mid-19th century corn drying kiln. It features a circular design with a corbelled interior and a central round chimney, measuring approximately 12 feet in internal diameter and about 20 feet high. The structure is built from rubble. It is connected to a single-storey barn and a three-bay cottage, which is currently disused as a dwelling, both of which are also constructed from rubble and topped with slate roofs.
To the west, there is an L-plan range of farm buildings that ends in a bowed bay, which includes the remaining part of the former circular kiln, complete with a circular coped stack. The kiln barn range has four doors and one small window on the west elevation, along with a single wallhead gabled loft window on the east side. The south-facing range has various enlarged entrances. The slate roofs are shaped around the carved gable of the kiln.
