Description
The Threshing Barn at The Old Schoolhouse in South Ronaldsay is a 19th-century structure. It is a central single-storey threshing barn flanked by a rectangular kiln and a byre, constructed from coursed rubble flagstone.
On the south elevation, there is a central threshing door with a small window to the left. The barn features a chamfered corner on the left side. To the outer left, there is a later addition of a byre with a central byre door and a window to the left, both of which have altered openings. The kiln is set back to the far right.
The east elevation shows that the kiln extends from the gable of the threshing barn. On the north elevation, the kiln is set back to the far left, and there is a blocked central threshing door. The west elevation was not observed in 2000.
The roofs are pitched throughout, with the threshing barn covered in replacement corrugated roofing material, while the kiln and byre have flagstone roofs.
Inside, the kiln features a plastered, circular interior with a kiln ledge. The flue and door openings are still present, and there is a step that leads up to the kiln door.
