Description

Kiln Barn is a structure likely built in the mid-18th century, forming the south arm of an L-shaped barn range. It stands three storeys tall, constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings, and features long elevations facing east and west. Internally, the barn is divided into two sections, with the southern third once serving as a kiln. A large modern entrance has been added to the kiln space, and the east winnowing door has been enlarged, accompanied by later flanking windows. Above the door, there is an original long loft window, along with a smaller window on the second floor. The west elevation also had similar doors and windows, which are now blocked. A forestair leads to the lofts at the north gable, which has a cat hole in the door.

The south gable features a canted stairwell with a piended slate roof and an internal cantilevered stone stair that serves the blocked entrance to the kiln floor. There are single vents on the east and west sides of the kiln, as well as paired gable vents for the kiln garret. The barn has crowstepped gables, a corniced ridge stack, and a roof made of Caithness slate with a stone ridge. Inside, the kiln floor has been removed, and the fire flue in the stairwell wall is blocked. An internal stair connects the first floor loft to the second floor, which leads to a stone-floored kiln garret with a central flue.

Adjoining the north gable forestair of the kiln barn is a contemporary three-storey, three-bay crowstepped barn, which serves as the north arm of the L-plan. Its windows and doors are blocked, and a large door has been added to the west gable, along with a large modern corrugated iron lean-to against the north elevation.

The byres, cottage, and dairy form a long single-storey range of buildings extending north and south from the south gable of the kiln barn, likely built in the late 18th to early 19th century. These structures are also made of rubble with tooled rubble dressings. The cottage consists of three bays and includes a cheese-press built into the east front. The dairy occupies the southernmost three bays and features crowsteps and an end gable with a ball finial, along with ridge stacks and graded Caithness slate roofs with stone ridges.

Additionally, there is a mid-19th century four-bay implement shed, which has open bays facing west, opposite the dairy range. This shed is constructed of rubble with tooled dressings and has a graded Caithness slate roof.
