Description

Sandside House is an early east-facing building dated 1751, which was extended in the earlier to mid-19th century, likely forming an H-plan layout. The southern recess was filled in during the late 19th century with a bold, tall two-storey entrance section that redefined the main entrance to the south. There were also substantial late 19th-century additions at the northeast, including a library and additional service rooms. The exterior is harled with ashlar dressings and margins.

The south-facing facade is two-storey and wide, featuring five bays. It has a prominent projecting central bay with an off-centre door and a segmental-headed light above, flanked by mullioned and transomed windows, which are mirrored in the first floor, lighting the later 19th-century drawing room. The flanking gabled crow-stepped bays have two-window facades, with the southeast gable being part of the original 1751 house. The west elevation is three-storey and has eight bays, with the upper windows breaking the wallhead into gablets.

The symmetrical two-storey and basement, five-bay house facing east has a centre bay with a shaped wallhead gable. The ground floor features a door, with a window above set in a semi-circular keystoned panel, and an oculus above that. The central door is flanked by later 19th-century rectangular bay windows, with scroll skewputts and an apex stack on the centre gablet. The gables have diminutive paired occuli. The 1751 and earlier 19th-century ranges have mainly been reglazed, but some 12-pane sash and case windows remain, along with stained and lattice glazing on the entrance front. Various single and two-storey additions fill the northeast and rear, enclosing an irregular rear service court, featuring some canted mullioned windows, corniced end and ridge stacks, and slate roofs.

Inside, the main south entrance leads into a panelled entrance hall, which connects to a stair hall with a carved wooden balustered staircase. The first-floor drawing room has a panelled dado and chimney piece, along with an ornate painted plaster ceiling with a cornice, and a pair of fluted pilasters framing a wide bay window. The early house retains its original scale and platform staircase, now enclosed in later 19th-century panelling.
