Description

The northwest walled garden of Sandside House features extensive high coped rubble walls that extend to the west of the house, retaining an elevated garden to the east. There are two large walled gardens, one to the south and one to the northwest, dating from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

In the northwest angle of the northwest walled garden stands a square, two-storey dovecote from the early to mid-19th century. It has an entrance in the south wall, paired vents in the west wall and a single vent in the north wall, all of which open onto the field and have internal shutters. There are also paired vents on each side of the southeast angle, leading into the first-floor loft. The dovecote is topped with a pyramidal Caithness slate roof, featuring an apex finial and a weathervane.

Additionally, there is an early 19th-century square privy built into the slope of the raised garden southeast of the house, which includes a cess pit below. The privy has a central door in the south elevation, accessed by a flight of steps descending from the garden to a lower level, and a small window in the center of the east elevation. It also has a pyramidal Caithness slab roof with an apex finial. Inside, a two-seater bench fitting remains.
