Description
Ormiston Primary School, built in 1888 by J and R Farquharson, was significantly extended and altered around 1910. This single-storey building includes classrooms and a main entrance set at an angle. It features squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, a cill course, and a cornice, while the rear is harled. To the south, there is a playground terrace, and later buildings are located to the north.
The entrance showcases a three-bay classical design in ashlar, featuring a Gibbsian round-arched doorway in a pedimented bay flanked by engaged columns and topped with a deep parapet, although a modern door has been inserted. The flanking bays contain round-arched windows in Gibbsian surrounds. Above, there is a square bellcote with an apron at the roofline, which is currently blocked, and it has a cornice, an ogival lead roof, and a weathervane.
The eastern arm of the building has 17 bays to the right of the entrance, featuring five pairs of gabled sections that break the eaves and include round-arched windows, alternating with smaller ashlar windows in the intervening bays. There are three central gables with small windows in their apexes, the central one being circular, and round-arched caps to the finials of the gables flanking the centre. To the right of the entrance is a single gabled bay. The eastern return elevation is gabled and has a flagpole on a stone bracket at its apex. To the left of the entrance bays, the western side has a short five-bay arm consisting of two paired gabled bays and one single bay, presented in a simpler style.
The windows are timber mullioned and transomed, with top-hopper panes. The building has ashlar coping to the skews and is roofed with purple slates.
The retaining walls, piers, and railings consist of rubble terrace walls that rise into a coped parapet, leading to the playground to the south of the main range. The gatepiers are square and made of ashlar with cornices, and there are decorative wrought-iron gates along with simple railings.
