Description

Oak House, located on Main Street in Ormiston, is an 18th-century building that has been reworked with additions in the early 19th century and around 1970, when a former building to the east was demolished. Originally designed in an L-plan, it has been altered to a T-plan. The exterior is made of harled rubble with painted stone dressings.

The northeast elevation features five bays, with a full-height canted bay added at the center around 1890, complete with a cornice and blocking course. There are windows on each floor in the bays to the right, with smaller windows on the first floor. To the left of the center, there is a segmentally arched pend, which has been modified to include a pair of windows in the outer bay, with an additional window above that was added around 1970.

On the southeast elevation, a gabled jamb projects off-center to the left and was later extended to the southeast, though only the curtain walls of this addition remain. The elevation has irregular openings on both the east and west sides of the jamb, including a doorway in the jamb near the re-entrant angle to the east, flanked by a round-arched stair window, along with two further ground floor windows and one first floor window. There is also a doorway in the re-entrant angle to the west, with one ground floor window and three first floor windows. A doorway that formerly led to a southern extension is located to the left of the two-bay south elevation, with a first floor window above in the bay to the right. Additionally, there is a conservatory addition on the west gable end.

The windows are sash and case style, featuring a 12-pane glazing pattern. The roof is covered with grey and purple slates and has swept eaves. End stacks indicate the former gable ends of the building.

Surrounding the property are high rubble retaining walls, which were once adjacent to cottages and later enclosed an orchard.
