Description

This is an 18th-century house with alterations made in the mid-19th century, located on The Wynd in Aberlady. The exterior is painted yellow render, with stone mullions dividing the windows into bipartites. The corners of the building are chamfered. A central door is sheltered by an advanced, crowstepped gabled porch, above which is a broad, strip fanlight. To the right of the door is a bipartite window, and to the left a single-light window, with these patterns repeated on the first floor. Small, enamelled plaques flank the windows, and dormerheads with crowstepped gables break the eaves. Decorative ball finials top the gableheads. Modern glazing has been installed. The steeply pitched roof is covered in grey slates with straight skews, and rendered chimney stacks.

The building is listed for the survival of the earlier house beneath the 19th-century facade detailing. It was formerly the residence of a ship owner and mariner, Smith, who placed the enamelled plaques. Accounts of the house are recorded in J Martine’s Reminiscences of East Lothian (1890).
