Rose Cottage, High Street, Aberlady

Rose Cottage is an early 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay house situated on High Street, Aberlady. The house’s frontage projects slightly from the adjacent terrace and has an unusual piended M-roof. The exterior is constructed of roughly squared and coursed sandstone with raised ashlar quoins and painted margins, including an eaves course and a blocking course. The central doorway is flanked by ground floor windows, and there are three windows at the first floor level under the eaves; the bay to the right is notably wider. Sash windows with modern glazing are present throughout. The roof is covered with red pantiles, and tall brick stacks have been renewed. A low ashlar coped wall encloses a small front garden. A change in the stonework to the left of the doorway suggests that the house may have originally been two separate buildings combined into one, a theory further supported by the presence of twin roofs.
