Description

Gilchriston is an earlier 18th century two-storey farmhouse that has had additions made to the south and east later in the century. The building is laid out in an L-plan and includes single-storey service buildings, which are likely also from the 18th century. The exterior is constructed from rubble and harled, featuring painted ashlar margins.

On the west elevation, the original farmhouse consists of three bays that are grouped towards the centre. An addition of two full-height irregular bays has been made to the south, and the doorway has been relocated to the new centre bay. The remaining bays have windows, with the ground floor windows enlarged and one additional window inserted on the south return elevation.

The east elevation features a gabled jamb projecting from the original farmhouse on the right, with a single-storey outbuilding abutting at ground level to the east and a lean-to structure to the south at the re-entrant angle. There is a first-floor window in the later bays to the left. A gabled outbuilding is attached to the north elevation on the left side. The windows are sash and case with 12-pane and 4-pane glazing patterns. The two-storey blocks are covered with grey slates and brown tiles, while the single-storey outbuildings have red pantiles. The building has end stacks, and decorative barley sugar cans have been retained.
