Description

Grieve's Cottage is a single-story, three-bay farm cottage dating to around 1870. It is constructed from squared sandstone rubble with stugged ashlar dressings. The south-east elevation features chamfered arrises to the openings. A gabled porch is centrally located, featuring a mannered lintel and a timber kingpost. The porch contains a two-leaf boarded door. Narrow windows are positioned in the flanking bays, and gabled timber dormers are situated above. A piend-roofed projection is present at the rear, with a modern harled extension to the west. The end elevations are blank. The windows are sash and case with an eight-pane glazing pattern. The building has timber eaves brackets and barge boards to the gables. Ashlar coped end stacks are also present. It is likely that the cottage was designed by John Farquharson of Haddington, and exhibits similarities to cottages at Eastfield and Whittingehame. It shares characteristics with cottages at Fenton Barns and may have been influenced by a pattern book. The cottage is part of the Leaston steading, located to the north, and near Leaston House, which is listed separately. The statutory address is Leaston Farm Grieve’s House.
