Description
This is a late 18th century sawmill with an attached timber store, situated on a sloping ground falling to the north. It has a rectangular plan and is constructed of rubble sandstone with harl pointing, ashlar dressings, and a metal plate. The lade (man-made channel carrying water) is now small, and the water wheel has been removed.
The west elevation features six bays. There are three doors to the left, and a door flanked by windows at ground level to the right, with two further windows above. The east elevation originally had a water wheel positioned in the center and features a large opening to the left and a buttressed wall to the right. The south elevation has low doors to the sawmill at ground level, and wide, tall doors to the timber store above. The north elevation has sliding doors and a ventilation slit at the apex. The windows have a variety of glazing patterns including small-pane glazing. The roof is covered in pantiles with a slate easing course, and a red brick stack is located at the northeast corner. Droved ashlar coping defines the skew joints.
The former sawmill is currently used as an outbuilding and garden toolshed. Humbie House, located to the south, is a separate listed building.
