Description

Highlea Farmhouse is a circa 1809 farmhouse, likely designed by Christopher Johnston. It is a 2-storey, 3-bay building with a single-storey service wing attached. The farmhouse is constructed of rusty red sandstone rubble with grey ashlar dressings.

The west elevation features a simple cornice above the openings and eaves course, with a fanlit doorway at the centre. Windows are located in the flanking bays and in each bay under the eaves. The east elevation includes a gabled service wing projecting in the centre; a modern porch has been inserted in the re-entrant angle to the north. Modern additions are present at the ground floor levels of both the north and south gables. An attic window is visible in each elevation to the west, one of which is now blocked.

The windows are sash and case with an 8-pane glazing pattern. The roof is steeply pitched, covered with purple slates, and features swept eaves and ashlar-coped end stacks.

The farmhouse is attributed to Christopher Johnston due to its close resemblance to his designs for Stobshiel Farmhouse of 1809. It is listed at Grade B for its striking colour and variation on a standard farmhouse design.
