Old Smithy, Main Street, East Saltoun

The Old Smithy on Main Street in East Saltoun was rebuilt around 1800. It is a roughly L-shaped group of buildings, currently used for residential purposes, located at a corner on a sloping site. The structure features harled pointed rubble. Originally, it served as a smithy with very low eaves and a steeply pitched roof that has an early skew form and a gablehead stack. There is a small square window on the west elevation, with a doorway next to it that breaks the eaves.

Adjoining to the south is a later addition, a three-bay building with eaves, which has a former doorway on the west side that has been blocked and converted into a window, with additional windows flanking it. The south elevation has a blank return gable, and there are end stacks. To the west, there is a piended building that is attached to the earliest structure and projects slightly to the north, featuring machinery doors. The south block has a 12-pane glazing pattern and is covered with pantiles.
