Greenknowe, Coatfield, Haddington

Greenknowe is an early 19th century single-storey and basement villa with a two-storey Victorian addition at the north. The south front features five bays, with the central bay breaking forward and supported by Roman Doric columns. The windows are architraved, and there are frieze and cornice wreaths centered above them at the frieze of the main entablature. Above, there is a low blocking course interrupted by podia centered over the pilasters. A single segmentally arched basement window flanks the steps, and the roof is low pitched, piended, and slated. The lower west bay has a single arched opening, with a cornice and blocking course raised at the center. The interior is elegant. The mid-Victorian two-storey addition at the back is built of whin rubble and has a roof with a higher pitch, which has been recently modernized. To the south, there is a walled garden featuring low balustraded terraces and an interesting rustic garden house with brushwood eaves of sophisticated design against the east wall.
