Description
This is a two-storey villa with a cellar, built in 1933 to a design by J R H MacDonald (executed by J M Contractors Ltd) in the International Style. It's located at 6 Kilmardinny Crescent, Bearsden.
The villa is generally smooth, whitewashed render over a brick base, with brick parapet coping. A tiny, projecting course is present at the windowheads on both floors. The main, north-facing elevation features a projecting polygonal stair tower with a shallow-pitched polygonal roof. A doorway is set within the re-entrant angle to the northwest, with a narrow light directly above. To the northeast, there's a tall, narrow, four-part stair window extending almost the full height of the tower. To the right, a recessed bay has a single window at ground level, with a further window wrapping around the exterior angle. The west elevation has a single-storey, flat-roofed bay projecting centrally, with an original metal-framed Crittal window. A modern glass door is located on the return to the right, with windows to the outer bays; the window to the left wraps around the corner. The first-floor features three asymmetrically-fenestrated bays. The south-facing garden elevation is asymmetrical, with emphasis on the verticality of the design, overlooking a steeply sloping garden. A full-height chimney breast projects at the right, and a similar feature (not a chimney breast) is situated to the left of centre. The east elevation combines various elements, including an original flat-roofed garage (with a door on the return), a set-back bay with a left bay adjoining the garage, and a door on the right return.
The roof is low, coped, and stepped, with some sections of metal railing. The northeast angle of the polygonal tower has a low top stage with a door facing west and windows to the southwest and south, with a stack immediately in front of the west window. The horizontal pattern of multi-pane glazing is visible in the metal-framed Crittal window on the west elevation; all other windows have been replaced. The roof of the tower is finished with glazed Belgian tiles, while the rendered chimney stacks have clay cans. Cast-iron downpipes are fitted with decorative rainwater hoppers.
The interior retains original banded fireplaces in the lounge and dining room, an oak staircase, an electric maids box, and some original radiator guards.
The terrace and boundary walls are brick-coped. The low brick-coped harled boundary walls are punctuated by polygonal brick gatepiers, which are pyramidally-coped with glazed Belgian tiles.
