St John's Roman Catholic Church, Car Road, Cumnock

St John's Roman Catholic Church, located on Car Road in Cumnock, was designed by William Burges and built between 1881 and 1882. This church features an Early Decorated style with a four-bay nave and aisles, along with a long-apsed chancel oriented to the south. There is an unfinished southeast tower that includes an organ chamber, and a lean-to timber vestibule at the north gable. The exterior is characterized by droved coursers and double-pitched parallel roofs over the nave and aisles. The north gable showcases a plate tracery rose window, while the aisles have two-light windows and trefoil-headed windows on the flanks.

Inside, the church has low cylindrical piers with uncut capitals and a kingpost roof, with the upper area finished as a waggon roof. The apse windows feature an arcaded wall treatment with shaft rings, and the spandrels of the chancel arch are mural-painted. The apse boasts a fine boarded ceiling, and there is a modern granite pulpit and altar. An altarpiece by J F Bentley, executed by N J Westlake, is located in the east aisle and features a rich late Gothic triptych. The stained glass in the apse was created by Westlake in 1884.
