Description
The Seed Store at 11-13 Grange Place in Kilmarnock is a former grain store built in the later 19th century. This two-storey, nine-bay building features an Italianate style with a classically inspired facade. The ground floor is adorned with Doric pilasters, while the first floor has Ionic pilasters. Notable architectural details include a base course, a broad plinth band with plain panels beneath the ground floor windows, and string courses with fluted panels at the first floor. Above the first floor windows, there is a row of segmental, slightly recessed niches decorated with reliefs of various cereals and masks representing different nationalities. The eaves cornice is detailed with dentilled soffits.
On the principal (south) elevation, the main entrance door is located in the third bay from the left and features a fanlight, a keystone, and a triangular pediment. There are plainer doors with bipartite overlights in the sixth and ninth bays. The remaining bays at ground level have bipartite windows with stone transoms and mullions. The first floor has a regular pattern of bipartite windows, also with stone transoms and mullions.
The west elevation consists of five bays, continuing the pattern of the main elevation. It includes a plain door with bipartite overlights in the second bay from the left and a modern vehicular entrance in the fourth bay.
