Description

39 and 41 John Finnie Street in Kilmarnock is a two-storey, three-bay Italian Gothic building dating from around 1870, with some later alterations. The property is constructed from red Ballochmyle sandstone and features modern shop fronts on the ground floor. The first floor showcases a distinctive design divided by pilasters topped with facetted finials, with a higher central bay that has a gablehead. The windows have bracketed cills, and there is a mock machicolated cornice.

On the entrance elevation, the ground floor has modern shop fronts, while the first floor is highlighted by a central gable that contains a quadripartite window with stone mullions and transoms. Above this window, a hoodmould rises to a central star that encloses a plaque, with a crowstepped gable above featuring a central arched light and hoodmould, topped with a fleur-de-lys finial at the apex. The end bays have tripartite windows with pointed-arched architraves and hoodmoulds that enclose carved hatching.

The first floor has 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is slate with straight skews and short, corniced brick stacks at the gableheads. The interior was not seen in 2001.
