Description

37 Portland Road in Kilmarnock is a single-storey, three-bay Italianate house built around 1870. It features a rectangular plan with lower recessed single bays on either side. The exterior is made of coursed red Ballochmyle dressed sandstone ashlar, with the sides rendered to mimic ashlar and painted harled wing returns. The building has a base course and projecting rusticated angle quoins.

On the south elevation, the central door is set in a shallow projection and features a round-arched pilastered doorpiece with a cornice and a scrolled panel adorned with a laurel wreath above. The door is panelled, and the steeply pitched gable above has a blank shield detail, simple bargeboards, and a finial. The outer bays have slightly advanced round-arched pilastered and panelled bipartite windows, with deep eaves above. The flanking wings each have a single round-arched window in an architraved surround, topped with finialled shaped gableheads.

The west elevation consists of a single-storey side wing that is regularly fenestrated. The north elevation has not been seen since 2001. The east elevation features a single storey with four single windows from the left to the middle and a bipartite window on the right. An ashlar wall forms a vehicle entrance adjoining the wing on the extreme left.

The principal elevation has 2-pane arched timber sash and case windows, while the sides of the wings have replacement 2-pane modern glazing. The pitched roof is covered with grey slate, featuring lead ridges, zinc valleys, and flashing. The painted cast-iron rainwater goods have gutters concealed behind the bargeboards. Yellow brick stacks with projecting ashlar neck copes and ornate yellow cans complete the roofline.

Inside, the former residence has been remodelled for office use but retains original timberwork in the entrance hall, including the original fanlight and semi-glazed panelled door. Cornices and skirting boards are preserved in some rooms.
