Description

The Central Hall on John Finnie Street in Kilmarnock was built between 1932 and 1933 and designed by William Forrest Valentine. This two-storey, three-bay building features a symmetrical layout with Italian Romanesque detailing. It is constructed from snecked and stugged red sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. The exterior includes a base course, a shallow recessed central segmental-arched bay with a balustraded balcony, an eaves course, a balustrade, and a large central blocking course with scrolled shoulders. There are pedestrian gateways on either side of the main building. To the right, there is a two-storey range that was built around the same time, as indicated on the Ordnance Survey map from 1938.

The east elevation, which serves as the entrance, features a shallow recessed two-storey central segmental-arched bay with a keystone. The entrance door has a fanlight above it, and there is a balcony with scrolled brackets above the door. This elevation also includes three round-headed arched windows. The end bays at ground floor level have tripartite windows, while the first floor has four round-headed arched windows in the end bays. On the left return, there are two windows at ground floor level, and a single-storey range at the rear has a row of round-headed windows. The two-storey range to the right has banded rustication on the ground floor, a wide canted corner bay, shop windows, and a garage door at ground floor level. The first floor of this range features two single windows on the east elevation, a single window at the canted corners, and five single windows facing John Dickie Street. The building has multi-pane glazing throughout and a slate roof.

The interior was not seen in 2001.
