Description
The churchyard of Laigh Kirk in Kilmarnock was enclosed around 1710. It features rubble walls topped with flat ashlar copes. The walls were later lowered to function as retaining walls, and the outer surfaces have been rendered.
Within the churchyard, there are several 18th century stones, including some table tombs with baluster feet and a few notable 19th century classical stones. Among the memorials is one for John Nisbet from 1683, and a Covenanter stone that was renewed by public subscription in 1823.
The entrance is marked by a pair of square ashlar gatepiers, which have panelled shafts and projecting square neck copes. Tall wrought-iron lamps with glazed coach lamps sit atop the gatepiers, and there are later wrought-iron gates.
