Description

The Bonded Warehouse on Strand Street in Kilmarnock, designed by Gabriel Andrew around 1896, is a three-storey, three-bay former office extension for whisky bonds. The front elevation features red Ballochmyle sandstone ashlar, while the side and rear elevations are constructed from yellow bricks. The building showcases giant order angle pilasters and has architraved and pedimented windows, along with an eaves course and cornice.

On the principal southwest elevation, the ground floor has a late 20th-century recessed shop front with paired windows in the first and second bays, a smaller window, and a two-leaf metal and glazed door in the third bay. Above this, the first floor has three regularly placed architraved bays that are in-filled to sash height, each topped with scroll bracket pediments. The second floor features sill courses supporting pilastered window surrounds, with a deep eaves course linking the main pilasters and a projecting cornice above.

The northwest elevation adjoins the southeast elevation of the main warehouse. The northeast rear elevation is not visible as of 2001, and the southeast elevation is a blind gable.

The second floor has replacement glazing with plate glass in the lower pane and a smaller opening top hopper. The first floor features red sandstone false bottom sashes with a slightly bowed glazed panel in the upper pane, which includes vertical glazing bars. The roof is piended with grey slate, overhanging eaves, aluminium ridging, and lead flashing. The painted cast-iron rainwater goods have concealed gutters, and there is a replacement downpipe on the main elevation. There are no chimney stacks.

Inside, the ground floor has been modernized for use as a shop, while the upper floors are designated for storage and former office use.
