Description

The Royal Bank of Scotland building on The Cross, Kilmarnock, was designed by W J Walker Todd for Dick Peddie, Todd & Jamieson of Edinburgh and constructed between 1937 and 1939, opening in June 1939. It is a two-storey bank building in a classical moderne style, dominated by a five-bay, domed rotunda at its centre, with angled elevations flanking. The building is constructed from polished Heworth Burn ashlar, channelled at ground level and set on a black granite plinth, with base, band, and eaves courses.

The principal south elevation showcases the rotunda, featuring tall arched windows with ashlar voussoirs and prominent consoled keystones to the outer and central bays of the ground floor. Bays two and four have narrower windows with a stylised swag and tail sculpture above the keystone. A band course runs above the ground floor, and five rectangular windows are positioned on the first floor. An architraved frieze is carved with "ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND". A cornice with a heavy banded base supports the main dome.

The southwest elevation features a projecting two-storey section adjoining the rotunda. An advanced bay to the left has an architraved doorway with a sculpted frieze depicting three coins flanked by saltires. The doorway is accessed by a two-leaf timber panelled door with brass fittings. A plaque inscribed "ROYAL BANK" is inset into the band course. To the right, a tall, narrow window is positioned on the ground floor, mirroring the detailing of the south elevation.

The north elevation connects to later buildings.

The southeast elevation mirrors the southwest, with a projecting two-storey section. An arched bay with rusticated voussoirs is the focal point, with a window above it. A tall, narrow window is located at ground floor level with the same stylised swag and tail sculpture as elsewhere. To the right a separate shop has been created.

The building utilizes 9 and 12-pane painted metal windows with metal glazing bars on the first floor, and metal windows with margin lights on the ground floor. The bowed front of the ground floor has three large arched metal windows, the central pane featuring a roundel, a glazed panel beneath, and surrounding margin panes. A copper-domed roof tops the rotunda, with an ornate bronze finial and flagpole. Hidden cast-iron rainwater goods are present. A long ashlar stack is located to the northwest, featuring plain cans.

The interior of the former banking hall features partial timber panelling of Indian Silver greywood, a Hoptonwood marble floor with ornamentation in Swedish green and Italian green marble, and a mosaic centrepiece depicting a 1939 "three penny" piece.
