Description

This building at 81 and 83 Gray Street in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is an earlier 19th-century, two-storey, three-bay property. It features a shopfront and attic designed by James MacLaren Sons and Soutar in 1909, and is part of an irregular terrace. The exterior is rendered and lined, with a slate roof and a rubble stack. The windows are primarily plate-glass sash and case, and the building has a mansard roof.

On the Gray Street elevation, there is a shopfront on the left with moulded Peterhead granite and tiled stall risers. It includes two elliptically-arched windows and a bowed window leading to a recessed door on the right, which has a painted segmental fanlight, oval pattern bevelled glazing, and a panelled soffit and ingo. To the right, there is a tripartite shopfront featuring a central door with a segmental-arched and glazed upper panel, along with a painted fanlight and tiled stall risers. The single plate glass windows have timber frames. Above, there is a painted frieze board with gold lettering that reads 'GOODFELLOW & STEVEN. Bakers', and a modillioned cornice. The first floor has three windows with lagged architraves, an eaves course, and a bracketed cornice. The mansard attic includes a segmentally-pedimented single dormer window at the center, flanked by pedimented bipartite windows. A moulded stack is located on the right side of the building.
