Description

20-24 (Even Nos) Castle Street in Dundee is a former Episcopal Chapel built in 1821. This two-storey, three-bay building has been altered to accommodate two shops and a bar. The front is made of cleaned ashlar sandstone, while the rear is constructed from rubble with ashlar dressings. The roof is slate and piended to the rear. The original three-light pointed windows feature timber tracery but have been modified to flat-headed windows at the front with modern frames.

On the front elevation, there is a central two-leaf door with a fanlight, set within a moulded Tudor-arch doorcase that is flanked by cast-iron cluster columns. To the left and right are modern shopfronts, and the building features a full-width moulded cornice and band course. The first floor has three large windows, and the building is topped with a coped parapet that has stepped angle dies and four pendant dies.

The rear elevation shows the nave, which is advanced from the street front block, with a canted apse at the center that includes a two-light pointed window. There are two additional windows on the left and right return elevations.

Inside, the ground floor has been modernized with a false ceiling that conceals the original ribbed cove ceiling and apse arch.
