Description
The Royal British Hotel, located at 2, 4 Castle Street in Dundee, dates back to around 1800, with classical embellishments added in the late 19th century. This four-storey building, which also has an attic, was originally a hotel and is now used as a university hall of residence with shops on the ground floor. The exterior features painted ashlar and a slate Mansard roof.
The ground floor has modern shopfronts at no 1A, while nos 2 and 4 Castle Street and no 2 High Street have pilastered and round-headed shopfronts. No 6 Castle Street has a plain 19th-century design. A continuous cill band runs along the second floor, and there is a consoled and corniced balustraded parapet with ball-finialled dies and pyramidal angle dies. The windows are timber sash and case, with 2- and 4-pane designs. The first-floor windows are architraved with sculpted round-headed pediments, the second-floor windows are shouldered with consoled cills, and the third-floor windows are architraved. There is a corniced wallhead stack on High Street and ridge stacks elsewhere.
On the High Street elevation, the building has ten bays arranged in groups of 3-3-4. The ground floor center features a modern door leading to the residence, with shopfronts on either side. There are ten windows on the first, second, and third floors, with various attic windows mostly hidden by the parapet.
The Castle Street elevation consists of six bays arranged in groups of 3-2-1. The center has a two-leaf panelled door with a pilastered doorpiece, decorative mouldings, and consoles, topped by a broken segmental pediment with a festooned sculpture in the tympanum and a truncated ball-finial. Shopfronts are located to the left and right, with six windows on the first, second, and third floors, and six attic windows mostly concealed by the parapet.
The interior has not been seen.
