Description

This is an early 19th century, two-storey villa built in a U-plan with a bow front, located at 99 Beach Crescent, Broughty Ferry, Dundee. The villa is constructed with harled walls, a slate roof, and stone-coped brick stacks. The corners are margined and rendered. Most windows are four-pane sash and case with margins, and the roof is piended.

The South elevation features a central bow with three windows and an apsidal roof. The outer bays are set back, with single, symmetrical windows at each floor. The East elevation has a centrally located, margined door featuring a plain transom light, a single window to the left, a bipartite window to the right, and two windows on the first floor. The North elevation is plain, with two piended gables concealed by a masking wall. The West elevation displays three symmetrically arranged single windows on both floors.

The ground floor has been partly restored. Notable interior features include an oval room with a moulded cornice and ceiling rose, and an original Adam-style fireplace. A central, semi-circular well-stair has a cornice and window to the North, along with a small, moulded ceiling rose. On the first floor, a bow-ended room to the South retains cornices and a coomb ceiling. An unusual double urinal is located in the cloakroom on the East side.

Exterior features include a curved stone enclosing wall to the South and Southeast. The villa was originally built for Charles Hunter of Burnside, and may have been designed by David Neave, who prepared the 1825 feuing plan for the area. The railway line, constructed from 1838, seems to have prevented the full realisation of that plan. The statutory address is BROUGHTY FERRY, 99 BEACH CRESCENT AND 1-5 (ODD NOS) ST VINCENT STREET, THE RED HOUSE.
