Description

These are an early 19th century pair of semi-detached town houses, located on Beach Crescent, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, and likely converted into four dwellings around 1860. The frontages are of ashlar stone, with snecked rubble at the rear and squared coursed rubble on the sides, all topped with a slate roof. The houses have two main floors plus a basement and attic. The fenestration is regular, incorporating 12-pane sash and case windows at raised ground floor on the south elevation, and 12-pane sash and case windows throughout the rest of the south elevation. Other windows are a mix of 4- and 8-pane sash and case designs, and dormers have mixed glazing. There is an eaves course, skew gables, three capped ridge stacks with uniform cans, and four canted dormers on both the north and south sides.

The south elevation features two moulded and pedimented doorpieces, supported by consoles and fanlights, approached by stone steps with iron railings. Four basement windows are present, along with a band course at raised ground floor level. Above this are four windows with moulded architraves and cornices, and six first-floor windows with a cill course and moulded architraves. Four canted dormers are also present. Cast-iron downpipes and a decorative hopper are located centrally.

The north elevation, which is accessed from King Street, is similar to the south elevation but incorporates margined doorpieces and fanlights at the centre of the first floor, approached by long stone steps with iron railings over a round arch. Two skylights are situated at ridge level.

The houses were depicted on James Leslie’s Map of the River Tay in 1849, and the staircases on the north elevation were shown in Ordnance Survey maps from 1860–62. Some windows on the south elevation have been replaced with uPVC. A low ashlar enclosing wall surrounds the property.
