Lamp Standard, Beach Crescent, Broughty Ferry, Dundee

Dating from around 1900, there are eight tall cast-iron lamp standards located along Beach Crescent, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, as well as one shorter example opposite 31 Beach Crescent. The lamp standards likely date from the introduction of electric lighting into Broughty Ferry under the 'Broughty Ferry Electric Lighting Order, 1900'. Each lamp standard has a round base decorated with a depiction of Broughty Castle and the inscription 'Burgh of Broughty Ferry' on the inspection door. They feature foliate moulding that transitions into slender round columns with ladder posts, and richly decorative lamp pendants incorporating a starfish motif. The shorter lamp standard has a richly moulded tiered base with a shaft of patera and lattice design, topped with an anthemion capital; the lantern is now missing. Reference: J Malcolm.
