Description

Dating to around 1900, the Beach Crescent in Broughty Ferry is distinguished by eight tall cast-iron lamp standards. Each has a round base featuring a depiction of Broughty Castle and the words 'Burgh of Broughty Ferry' on the inspection door. The lamp standards feature foliate moulding that transitions into slender, round columns with ladder posts, topped with richly decorative lamp pendants adorned with a starfish motif. One shorter lamp standard is located opposite 31 Beach Crescent. This standard has a richly moulded tiered base, a shaft with a patera and lattice design, and an anthemion capital; the lantern is missing. These lamp standards likely date from the introduction of electric lighting to Broughty Ferry under the 'Broughty Ferry Electric Lighting Order, 1900'. Reference to the lamps is made in J Malcolm’s Parish of Monifieth (1910), p 263.
