Description
Baldragon House, located at 5, 7, and 9 Cowgate in Dundee, was designed by James Sibbald and completed in 1910. This is a five-storey building with an attic, featuring six bays and situated on a splayed corner site with shopfronts on the ground floor. The exterior is finished in red ashlar, with brick used on the sides and rear, topped by a grey slate roof.
Architectural details include a cill band at the first floor, a cill course at the second and third floors, and a corbelled main cornice at the third floor. The building has a corniced and coped parapet, with channelled pilasters flanking the angle bay that rises to a dormer featuring a mannered parapet, which conceals a square dome topped with an aediculaed lantern. The windows are a mix of single, paired, and canted styles, with 2-pane timber sash and case glazing. The first floor features corniced windows, while the second floor has a continuous cornice with three pediments. There are two single dormers with segmental pediments and two tripartite dormers with triangular pediments, along with corniced gable stacks.
On the Cowgate elevation, there are modern shopfronts at the ground floor, a canted window to the left, and three single windows to the right on the upper floors, along with tripartite and two single dormers. The Murraygate elevation also has modern shopfronts at the ground floor, a bipartite window on the upper floors, and a dormer at the left angle, along with a canted window on the upper floors and a tripartite dormer to the right. The interior has not been seen.
