Description

The crematorium on Macalpine Road in Dundee was designed by Lindsay Gray in 1936. It is a brick building featuring a Romanesque style with round arched windows. The structure has a tall, five-bay gabled nave that is surrounded by flat-roofed aisles, chancels, and an apsidal workroom.

On the east gable, there is a stepped tower that conceals twin chimney flues, which were rebuilt and slightly heightened around 1985. A recessed panel bearing a cross is also present. The flat-roofed canted apse has twin round arched windows, and the front aisles feature triple lights.

The sides of the crematorium have five bays of large clerestory lights above the flat-roofed aisles, which consist of seven triple-light bays. The west gable includes a round-arched entrance with a gothic iron hinged door, flanked by single and double lights. A large stepped triple light window is set within an ashlar recessed arch.

The roof of the gables is covered in slate.

Inside, the crematorium features ashlar facing up to the clerestory level and a pilastered barrel vaulted ceiling. The nave is separated from the aisles by a low five-bay arcade. There is ornate ironwork on the inner chancel gates and radiator covers, along with stained glass windows by A L Russell in the east window and T S Halliday.

To the west, there is a tile-roofed pergola that was built after the war and is continually being extended. The superintendent's house and former waiting room is a single-storey brick building with concrete cills and a cornice. The central bay of the east elevation has a French window with bowed windowed sides, a gabled wallhead stack with twin recessed arches, and a steep piended slate roof with tapering stacks. The glazing pattern has been altered except in the waiting room.

The property is accessed through ornamental steel gates on square brick gatepiers, with rubble-built boundary walls surrounding the site.
