Description

Strathmartine Parish Church, located on Strathmartine Road in Dundee, is a rectangular-plan church built in 1843 and later remodeled with Romanesque details by David Baxter (Johnston and Baxter) around 1900.

The gable facing the street was rebuilt around 1900 and features a gabled entrance with a nook-shafted round-headed arch adorned with chevron mouldings and alpha and omega symbols in the tympanum. Above this entrance is a wheel window with beakhead and chevron mouldings. A corbelled and blind arcaded bellcote is present, and there are triple round-headed lights on each side of the door within an arched impost-level string course.

The side elevations consist of five bays, with the westernmost bay remodeled around 1900, featuring a ground floor nook-shafted round-headed light and a mullioned double light above. The eastern four bays have tall round-headed chamfered windows. A datestone from 1843 is located on the south elevation, and a lean-to with Romanesque detailing is found at the eastern end of the north elevation.

The eastern gable includes triple round-headed lights and a stack. An additional small round apsidal-ended hall or church office was added to the east around 1900, featuring pilaster strips, sill courses, paired round-headed windows, and a corbel course. A modern hall has been extended to the east. The church has a slate roof, and the leaded windows were reglazed around 1900.
