Description

Gulberwick Mission Church, dated 1898, is a symmetrical hall church with three bays. It features harl pointed stugged sandstone walls, with stugged and droved dressings and details.

The south entrance gable has a two-leaf vertically boarded timber door with a plate glass fanlight centered below a plaque in a chamfered frame that reads "Church of Scotland Lerwick Parish Mission Hall 1898." Above this, there is a blind slit window in the gablehead, topped by a gabled stugged sandstone belfry with a pointed-arched opening on a rectangular plinth at the apex of the gable (the bell has been absent since 1996).

Both the east and west elevations are identical, each featuring a pointed-arched window in three regularly spaced bays. The north gable showcases a gothic traceried window in a pointed-arched opening, with a blind slit window centered in the gablehead, surmounted by a plain stone cross at the gable apex.

The windows have gothic traceried timber fixed lights and leaded glass with colored glass on the north elevation. The roof is covered with purple grey slates, featuring a clay tile ridge and ashlar skew copes with bracketed and gabletted skewputts. There are cast iron gutters and downpipes with octagonal hoppers, and droved ashlar wallhead stacks with circular cans rising through the midpoint of the south gable skews.

The interior was not seen in 1996.

The kirkyard is enclosed by a rectangular random rubble wall with a rounded rubble cope. It features square stugged sandstone gatepiers with semicircular copes and a hooped steel gate centered on the north side.
