Description

Hayfield House, located on Hayfield Lane in Lerwick, dates from around 1840. This two-storey building, which has a raised basement and originally featured a U-shaped plan, has been modified with a modern two-storey lean-to addition at the rear, resulting in a square plan. The exterior is constructed from stugged squared and snecked granite, accented with droved sandstone ashlar dressings, while the rear elevation is cement-rendered. The windows are margined and have projecting cills.

On the south (principal) elevation, there is a prominent droved sandstone ashlar porch at the main floor level. This porch features a flight of stone steps leading to a round-arched doorway, which is flanked by narrow sidelights and has a cornice above. A window is centrally located on the first floor, with regular fenestration in the adjacent bays.

The east and west elevations are also regularly fenestrated. The east elevation has a modern lean-to addition at the basement level. There are blind windows on the first floor in the outer left bay of the east elevation and in the outer bays on the west elevation.

The north (rear) elevation features a modern cement-rendered lean-to addition that obscures both the basement and principal floors. There is a window in the infilled centre bay at the second floor, and a blind window in the bay to the left.

The building has modern timber lying-pane windows, a grey slate piended roof with terracotta ridge tiles, and profiled cast-iron gutters with decorative brackets. Droved ashlar chimney stacks flank the centre bay, topped with copings and red circular chimney cans.
