Description

This building, located at 37 Westburn Road in Aberdeen, dates from the mid-19th century and was originally a pair of semi-detached houses that have since been converted into flats. It is two stories high with an attic and has a rectangular plan. The northern and eastern elevations are finished in coursed granite ashlar, while the southern and western elevations are made of rubble. Key architectural features include a base course, recessed panels beneath projecting cills, segmental-arched openings on the ground floor, a dividing band course, a deep eaves cornice, an eaves blocking course, curvilinear gables, and curvilinear gableted dormers.

The northern elevation is near-symmetrical, featuring a panelled timber door with a segmental-arched fanlight in the penultimate bay to the right on the ground floor. There is a former doorway to the left of this bay that is now glazed. The remaining bays have regular fenestration, as does the first floor. The eaves blocking course steps up to the centre bay, and there is a dormer for each bay in the attic.

The western elevation is asymmetrical and gabled. It includes a single-storey, single-bay addition to the right on the ground floor, with a window on the right return and another window above on the first floor. There is also a round-arched window in the attic. Additionally, there is a two-storey addition to the bay on the right, with a window on the right return at the first floor and another window above in the attic.

The southern elevation is also asymmetrical, featuring a modern glazed door in the penultimate bay to the right on the ground floor, flanked by windows. There are flat-roofed and lean-to additions obscuring the bays to the left, with irregular fenestration in the remainder and three gableted dormers in the attic.

The eastern elevation is symmetrical and consists of two bays, with regular fenestration in the outer left and right on both the ground and first floors, and round-arched windows in the attic.

The building predominantly features four-pane timber sash and case windows. It has a grey slate mansard roof with lead ridges, coped stone skews, and corniced granite gablehead stacks with octagonal cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron.

The interiors were not seen in 1999.

The property also includes square-plan stugged granite gatepiers to the northeast with decorative caps, along with coped rubble boundary walls, some of which have brick coping.
