Description

Dated 1837 and recast in 1929, Ness-of-Sound is a two-storey, three-bay, near-symmetrical classical villa of an L-plan, with a single-storey wing set into the re-entrant angle, and single-storey porches projecting to the north and east. The walls are harled with cement-rendered and lined dressings, featuring long and short quoins at windows and corners, and projecting cills to the windows.

The east (principal) elevation has a projecting entrance porch, centred at ground level, containing a central six-panel timber door and a four-pane fanlight. Flanking the door are tall windows divided by stop-chamfered square columns with capitals and bases. The side elevations have bipartite windows with stop-chamfered arrises. A plain cornice and balustraded parapet runs around the eaves. A French window with a two-pane glazed upper section and an eight-pane fanlight is centred above the porch. A two-storey, four-light bay window, featuring string and cill courses and a crenellated parapet, is situated in the bay to the left. A bipartite window is at ground level in the bay to the right, and a Wyatt window is offset to the left on the first floor. A wide corniced pediment is topped with a datestone bearing the inscription "J G 1837 RECONSTRUCTED R D G 1929" within the tympanum.

On the south elevation, the two-bay end of the principal range is advanced to the right. There are windows at ground and first floor levels in the bay at the left. The rear wing is recessed at the left, and a single-storey, flat-roofed wing sits in the re-entrant angle, incorporating a window at first floor level.

The west (rear) elevation has a recessed two-bay section of the principal range to the right, with a tall eight-pane stair window adjacent to the re-entrant angle. The rear wing elevation is advanced to the left, displaying a window at ground level to the right of centre, and a Wyatt window centred on the first floor. Single bay wing elevations flank the rear wing.

The north elevation has windows roughly centred at ground and first floor levels. A single-storey porch features a vertically-boarded timber door with a three-pane fanlight and a pair of windows in its side elevations.

Timber sash and case windows are present throughout, with multi-pane upper sashes and two-pane lower sashes. An eight-pane fixed-light stair window has coloured border glazing. A purple-grey slate, piended roof is topped with terracotta ridge terminals and profiled cast-iron gutters and downpipes. Stugged ashlar wallhead stacks are centred on the end elevations of the principal range, with an additional stack near the re-entrant angle, all coped with octagonal cans. A single-flue harled stack with a circular can is located at the corner of the north porch.

The interior retains many fittings from the 1929 refit, including a timber stair with a herringbone pattern soffit; the upper flight oversails with balustrades on both sides in a nautical form.

Random rubble garden and terrace walls enclose the property, featuring flagged paths and stone steps. Stugged sandstone piers with pyramidal caps centre the east wall.
