Description

Draffen and Jarvie is a department store located at 36 Nethergate in Dundee, designed by Thoms and Wilkie in 1935. It is a four-storey building with an attic and features a three-bay addition. The facade is made of ashlar on a steel frame, with a polished grey granite shopfront and a flat roof. Notable architectural elements include a vertically ribbed band course above the ground and third floors, a bracketed balcony with an open-work parapet on the second floor, and a dentilled cornice adorned with lion gargoyles at the third floor. The building has tall border-glazed metal-framed windows, pilastered on the first floor, and architraved and recessed in panels on the second and third floors, with cast metal panels between the floors. The attic features square windows.

The front elevation includes the original shopfront on the ground floor, which has a recessed doorway and metal-framed plate-glass windows. There are three windows each on the first, second, and third floors, along with three attic windows. The right return elevation mirrors the front elevation but is two bays wide, continuing down Coutties's Wynd with plain render and various windows.
