Description
Burton's is a five-storey department store located at 122-132 Argyle Street in Glasgow, designed by Harry Wilson in 1929, with additions and alterations by R I Pierce and N Martin in 1938. The building features a symmetrical design with a prominent corner position, clad in Portland stone over a steel frame. The shop front has been altered, but retains a moulded cornice.
On the Argyle Street side, the façade is characterized by giant quasi-Ionic pilasters that flank the central bay. These pilasters are fluted at the base and neck and support a chevroned frieze that spans the flanking bays. The fourth floor has a slightly projecting moulded panel with cusped voussoirs above a semi-circular window, which is flanked by square windows. The outer jambs and lintels of the flanking bays have cavetto arrises. The narrow outer bays extend to the third floor and are cut back to a concave shape at the fourth floor, featuring a small window and Art Deco lamp standards set at an angle. A cavetto cornice with foliate detail and an oval cartouche is present in the concave bays, along with a moulded blocking course above the centre. Decorative blue-painted metal bands are located between the first and third floors, following Burton's house style, with wreath and acroteria details on the second-floor panels.
The Buchanan Street elevation mirrors the Argyle Street design, with paired quasi-Ionic pilasters that are glazed between, flanking the central bay. The fourth floor features fleche detailed panels with quasi-anthemion motifs above. The northeast elevation is recessed from Buchanan Street and is constructed of plain ashlar with tripartite windows at the ground level. There are narrow strip lights in the centre and wider flanking windows, along with a fluted band above the third floor and an elongated octagonal window at the centre of the fourth floor. A stepped string course is positioned above, and an initialled oval cartouche is found on the cavetto cornice. The building includes metal casement and hopper windows in a 1930s style, with opaque glass at the first floor.
