Description
8-12 South Ward Road in Dundee is a factory building designed by H and F Thomson in 1909, with an extension added in a similar style in 1914. The structure is four stories high and features 15 bays, along with a five-bay return gable facing South Ward Road. It is constructed from stugged and snecked pinkish sandstone rubble, has a bull-faced base course, and ashlar dressings, while the rear is finished in red brick. The roof is covered with grey slate.
The base course is complemented by a moulded cill course on the first floor, which connects to keystoned and moulded round-headed arches of the two-storey windows at the impost level. There is also a moulded cill course on the third floor and a wallhead course. The windows are tripartite, featuring 8-pane timber sash and case glazing, with 8-pane windows on the ground floor and large two-storey tripartite transomed and mullioned round-headed windows at the ground level.
The front elevation is symmetrical, with each group of three bays consisting of a two-storey round-headed window in the center, flanked by windows on the left and right at each floor. There are three windows on the second and third floors, and a sliding door for vehicle access is located in the outer left and right bays, although the outer right entrance is now blocked.
The South Ward Road elevation includes a four-storey, two-bay block on the left with a sliding door and window on the ground floor, and tripartite and bipartite windows on each upper floor. To the right, there is a three-storey, three-bay block featuring two doors and a bipartite window on the ground floor, with three windows on each upper floor.
The rear elevation is asymmetrical but maintains a regular pattern of fenestration, although the windows are blocked. The block on the left is slightly higher, and there is a truncated chimney stalk at the center of the main block on the right. The interior has not been seen.
