Description

228-230 High Street in Dalkeith is a mid-18th century, three-storey tenement building. It has three main bays, with a fourth bay on the outer left that was formerly a stair. The building features variegated sandstone random rubble with cherry-caulking, ashlar dressings, and some concrete repairs. The east elevation is pebble-dashed, while the south elevation is harled. The west elevation has raised margins, a lintel course at the eaves level, and an eaves cornice.

On the west (High Street) elevation, there is a door with a strip fanlight in the center bay. To the outer left, there is a pend with a modern concrete keystoned lintel and an original relieving arch. The fenestration is regular, with a smaller window and relieving arch on the second floor of the center bay. The center bay also features a gabled wallhead stack with coped skews and scroll skewputts.

The north elevation is blank, with a blocked former stair window located to the right of center between the ground and first floors. The south elevation is also blank, showing evidence of former buildings that were once adjoining.

The east elevation consists of four bays and includes a modern stair block addition in the bay to the right of center, which has a cat-slide roof and a door (No 230) on the right return. The fenestration is nearly symmetrical, with 12-pane glazing patterns in the sash and case windows, and a 16-pane window in the outer right bay. The building has coped skews and scroll skewputts, except at the southeast corner, and features gablehead stacks with a grey slate roof.

At the northwest corner, there is a semicircular coped rubble wall, which includes a postbox marked "G VI R."
