Description
The Submarine Mining Station in Broughty Ferry, built between 1886 and 1887, is a former depot for submariners. It features a rectangular plan and is constructed of snecked rubble with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate and corrugated metal roof. The building has 12-pane sash and case windows, wall and gablehead courses, coped skews, and shouldered ridge stacks.
On the west elevation, there is a two-storey block on the left side, which includes four doors and windows on the ground floor. A veranda with cast-iron columns and an iron balustrade is accessed from a forestair at the left return gable. The first floor has two doors and eight windows, along with a partially glazed lean-to porch on the left. The single-storey block on the right has three elliptically-arched entrances and two windows, with an additional two windows on the right return gable.
The east elevation features a door and seven windows at the ground floor of the block on the right, while the single-storey block on the left has four multi-pane windows.
Surrounding the building is a round-coped snecked rubble wall that encloses the site on the north, south, east, and west sides.
