Description

East Cluden Mill is a corn mill dating to the later 18th century, with extensions added to the east in the first half of the 19th century. It is situated beside the River Cluden. The mill was converted in 1973-4 into a house, and a kiln to the east was subsequently demolished. Architects for the conversion were T I Morton & Son, of Dumfries.

The mill is tall and rectangular in plan, with a low east wing. The south elevation, facing the river, is constructed from droved red ashlar with original openings, now fitted with modern glazing. Two large, low-breast iron and timber wheels are visible on this elevation, and were repaired around 1983. The other elevations are of painted rubble with modern slappings and plate glass windows, with some blocked openings. A prominent heavy band course runs below the eaves. There is a single, modern axial stack, and the roof is covered with graded slates. A 1786 datestone is set in a lean-to at the west, which may be original to the mill. The mill is listed primarily for its river elevation and the visible wheels.
