Description
Upper Cluden Farmhouse and Steading dates to around 1830 and was designed by Walter Newall of Dumfries. It is a single-story farmhouse with a roughly U-shaped plan, built around a small courtyard, accompanied by a detached U-shaped steading to the west. The buildings are constructed of whitewashed rubble with painted rusticated quoins. The farmhouse also features painted, chamfered margins.
The east elevation of the farmhouse has five regular bays, with a shed door positioned on the right side. The south elevation has two bays. The main entrance is located within the courtyard on the west side, partially enclosed by a screen wall, with a shed extending northwards. Sash windows are present throughout, and corniced ridge stacks rise from the roof. The roof is piended.
The steading consists of a tall, gabled barn at the north end, incorporating a cartshed open to the courtyard, and an apsidal housemill that abuts the west gable. The west and south ranges of the steading are lower, with piended roofs, and a single doorway on the south wall of the latter range. All roofs are covered with graded slates.
The completed construction differs from illustrations published by Loudon, and it’s noted that a degree of creative adaptation was used in their publication. According to the New Statistical Accounts, Francis Maxwell acquired the Gribton estate in 1827 and initiated improvements in 1828. Statutory address revised in 2019. Previously listed as ‘Upper Cluden Farmhouse and Steading’.
