The Old Schoolhouse, 34 High Street, Lochmaben

The Old Schoolhouse, located at 34 High Street in Lochmaben, is a notable building designed by the architect, probably Walter Newall, around 1830. This unusual double-pile, two-storey house is set back from the street, featuring a central main entrance on its otherwise plain twin-gabled northern side. The exterior is finished with painted stugged and squared rubble, accented by chunky ashlar margins. The entrance includes a panelled door topped by a tall fanlight and is sheltered by a pedimented canopy.

On the main western elevation, there are mullioned windows, with two shallow projecting tripartite windows at the ground floor and three bipartite windows above, all linked to an eaves band. The eastern elevation has three bays, with a central door that is currently blocked at the southeast corner, and multi-paned glazing on the first floor. Throughout the building, small-paned sash windows are present. The roofs are shallow-pitched, with skews running horizontally over skewputts, and feature corbelled end stacks with diamond flues. The roof is covered with graded slates.
