Kindar Lodge, New Abbey

Kindar Lodge in New Abbey is a building that dates from around 1840, designed in the style of Walter Newall of Dumfries. It is an addition to the east gable of a late 18th or early 19th century L-plan house, which now serves as the rear wing and features an open court to the north. The structure is two storeys tall.

The addition has north and east elevations that are treated similarly, each consisting of two bays with one advanced gabled bay and a shallow projecting ground floor window in a recessed bay. The walls are made of channelled bull-faced white granite ashlar, except for the north gable, which has contrasting red ashlar dressings. The windows are mostly bipartite mullioned types with lying-pane glazing, while the remainder of the house is built from rubble. The north gable is prominently advanced and includes an east-facing doorway in the re-entrant angle, featuring a panelled door accessed by steps and a hood supported by a single console on the right. The roof has straight skews that sweep over skew putts, and there are axial stacks, possibly cut down apex stacks, with corniced octagonal flues.

The rear wing has been altered, likely around 1840, and features four narrow bays on the south elevation, with a glazed door on the right. The north range has a three-bay courtyard elevation, which includes an inserted garage, and a single storey range beyond. The windows are sash types with 4-pane glazing, and the entire building is roofed with graded slates.
