Description

Circa 1840 addition in style of Walter Newall of Dumfries to

east gable of late 18th/early 19th century L-plan house;

latter now forms rear wing, with open court at north. 2

storeys.

Addition: north and east elevations are similarly treated -

each is 2 bays with one advanced gabled bay and shallow

projecting ground floor window in recessed bay; each is built

of channelled bull-faced white granite ashlar (except north

gable) with contrasting red ashlar dressings; mullioned

(mostly bipartite) windows with lying-pane glazing (remainder

of house is rubble-built). North gable is boldly advanced,

with east-facing doorway in re-entrant angle; panelled door

approached by steps, hood on single console (at right).

Straight skews swept over skew putts; axial stacks (?cut down

apex stacks) with corniced octagonal flues. Rear wing:

altered possibly circa 1840; 4 narrow bays to south

elevation, with glazed door at right; north range with 3-bay

courtyard elevation (inserted garage) single storey range

beyond. Sash windows with 4-pane glazing. All roofed with

graded slates.
