7 The Square, New Abbey

7 The Square in New Abbey is a row of cottages that originated in the mid-18th century and have undergone many alterations since. The building is single storey with an attic, featuring a bowed corner at the northern end and a later lean-to that was formerly a weigh-house at the southwest. The exterior is finished in harled sandstone with raised ashlar margins around the doors and windows. The ground floor has alternating doors and windows, likely modified later, including bipartite windows with a stone mullion between the doors of numbers 7 and 9. At number 6, there are later two-leaf timber sliding doors leading to an old smithy, which has a small plaque above the forge door inscribed with "BY HAMMER AND HAND ALL ARTS DO STAND. R.M. 1775~." The attic features four later piend-roofed dormers with decorative brackets and slate-hung cheeks.

Most of the windows are timber sash and case with predominantly four-pane glazing, although there are some uPVC windows at the northern end. The building has ashlar-coped skews and coped sandstone stacks topped with thake-stones, along with tall, decorative yellow clay cans. The roof is covered with distinctive graded grey Lancashire slate.
