Description

Girthon Kirk House is an earlier 18th century house, set out with long north and south elevations. The building has modern projecting bays and a single-storey outhouse wing to the east. The walls are approximately 4 feet thick at the ends and 3 feet 6 inches thick on the lateral sides, with fine-bearing and off-centre gables. The walls are rendered over a battered boulder basecourse. The south elevation has approximately five near-regular bays. A full-height projecting porch bay with a piend roof was added around 1950, centrally on the south elevation. All windows have painted raised margins and are sash and case windows with plate glass glazing.

The north elevation features a boldly projecting modern full-height bay, off-centre to the left and with a piend roof. The windows on the north elevation are sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The steeply pitched roof is covered in graded slates, and has stocky end and axial coped stacks with thackstanes and end skews.

To the east is a single-storey painted rubble wing, which contains a cheese store and outhouses. The windows in this wing have a small-pane glazed upper portion and a lower part with slot ventilators. It has piended slate roofs with sandstone ridges.

The unusual placement of windows on the south elevation, opposite an internal gable, suggests that the west gable might be a later addition. However, the wall thicknesses and window dimensions are consistent throughout the building. The layout of Girthon Kirk House is similar to Fairgirth House (Colvend and Southwick Parish), which also has a large internal gable with a cooking hearth. Both buildings are associated with ecclesiastical sites. The statutory address is Kirk House (Former Manse).
